Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Snoring with Oral Appliance Therapy


This paper expounds on the 2006 practice parameter paper, and incorporates an extensive literature review that is up to date. It was done by a seven member task force commissioned by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). The result was a set of guidelines, or practice parameters, by which dentists and physicians should evaluate and adhere, to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes for their Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients who are treated with an oral appliance The parameters are given in the first page's six suggestions, but the complete article is presented here for a better understanding of the report's methodology. The efficacy and effectiveness of CPAP and oral appliance therapy are compared in this article.

Efficacy versus Effectiveness in the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: CPAP and Oral Appliances


Although CPAP is considered more efficacious in bringing down the apnea hypopnea index, or AHI, randomized trials suggest similar improvements in health outcomes between the two treatment modalities.
