Non-Surgical Solutions

Regenerative Solutions (PRF/PRP)

TMJ issues are often caused by some sort of trauma, whether that's self inflicted by years of clenching and grinding, or by a car accident, that trauma often causes inflammation in the TMJ which if left untreated can lead to reduced range of motion, severe pain, bite changes, and degeneration of bone in the joint. Our bodies have a natural ability to heal themselves, and at Sleep Advantage Dr. Erickson is on the cutting edge of TMJ therapies and is among the leaders in regenerative therapies such as PRP and PRF which harness our bodies ability to heal and focuses that healing in a concentrated point, such as the TMJ.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections. Platelet-rich plasma injections use a concentration of the patient's own platelets to increase and accelerate the body's natural healing processes. These injections work in conjunction with other treatments like oral appliance therapy to give our patients the quickest relief possible and the best change for long lasting results.

It starts with a quick and very small blood draw from the patient, usually 1-3 tubes. Since the blood draw is so small the patient will not typically feel faint or any other effect. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge and the platelet rich plasma extracted. This is then injected into the injured joint.

In this helpful video by HSS sports medicine physician Brian D. Halpern demonstrates how PRP injections work to increase our body's natural ability to heal. We utilize the same techniques in treating TMJ issues.
